Floods, Landslides Destroy Indonesia, Sri Lanka
(MENAFN) Violent flooding and massive landslides in Indonesia and Sri Lanka have resulted in more than 2,000 people confirmed dead or unaccounted for by Saturday, based on figures released by authorities.
Extraordinary floods, earthslides, powerful storms, and cyclonic weather have triggered extensive destruction throughout South Asia and Southeast Asia.
Among the affected nations, Indonesia has suffered the most severe impact, with Sri Lanka following closely behind.
Indonesia’s national disaster management agency reported that 995 individuals have lost their lives, while 226 others remain missing on the island of Sumatra. Additionally, more than 5,000 people have sustained injuries as emergency teams continue ongoing search and rescue missions.
Over 3.2 million residents have been impacted by catastrophic flooding and landslides across the severely affected regions of North Sumatra, West Sumatra, and Aceh.
In Sri Lanka, fatalities linked to Cyclone Ditwah have climbed to 640, while 211 people are still unaccounted for since the cyclone made landfall on Nov. 17, according to the Disaster Management Center.
The destructive floods have also disrupted the lives of more than 1.6 million people and inflicted damage on approximately 110,000 homes, with over 5,700 houses completely demolished.
The UN stated last week that at least 185 deaths have been recorded in southern Thailand, with 367 individuals still missing. Meanwhile, four fatalities were confirmed in India and three in Malaysia as extreme weather continued to batter the region.
