Drone Attack on UN Peacekeeping Base in Sudan Claims Six Lives

(MENAFN) A deadly drone assault on a United Nations compound in Kadugli, capital of Sudan's South Kordofan State, claimed the lives of at least six UN peacekeepers and left seven more wounded on Saturday, according to Sudanese officials.

The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) pointed fingers at the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for orchestrating the lethal strike—an accusation the RSF immediately rejected.

Military sources from SAF reported that the unmanned aircraft launched three missiles targeting the UN headquarters and the Bangladesh Battalion base, igniting a UN storage depot in flames. Every casualty came from the Bangladesh Battalion, deployed as part of the UN Interim Security Force for Abyei, which monitors the contested border zone between Sudan and South Sudan.

Sudan's Transitional Sovereign Council, aligned with SAF, issued a forceful condemnation of what it characterized as an RSF drone bombardment on UN property in Kadugli. The council declared the incident a grave breach of international humanitarian law and the safeguards protecting UN installations.

"Targeting a protected UN facility represents a dangerous escalation and criminal behavior amounting to an organized terrorist act," the council said, warning that the assault creates an immediate danger to humanitarian operations and international missions worldwide.

The council placed the RSF "fully responsible" for the bloodshed and called on the United Nations and global powers to implement decisive action to shield UN compounds and humanitarian staff, demanding accountability through international legal channels.

The RSF, however, categorically refuted any involvement in aerial operations against the UN site. Through an official statement, the paramilitary group dismissed the charges as "baseless," characterizing them as fabricated accusations designed to smear its forces.

The RSF asserted its record is "entirely free" of attacks on international organizations, emphasizing its previous efforts to safeguard UN facilities and guarantee humanitarian worker security. The group urged international organizations to conduct thorough fact-checking.

Sudan remains consumed by catastrophic warfare that erupted on April 15, 2023, when hostilities ignited between SAF and the RSF, resulting in tens of thousands of fatalities and forcing millions to flee their homes within Sudan's borders and into neighboring nations.
