NEW DELHI, Dec 9 (KUNA) -- India and the European Union held on Tuesday extensive talks to expedite conclusion of India-EU FTA and deepen trade relationship.
A statement from the Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry said that Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal held discussions with EU's Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic during 8 and 9 December in New Delhi.
"The discussions were aimed at providing strategic guidance to the FTA negotiating teams as both sides work towards concluding the agreement at the earliest," the statement said.
Technical discussions are on in New Delhi on major chapters of India-EU FTA covering market access for goods, rules of origin, services, technical barriers to trade, trade and sustainable development issues since 3 to 9 December as Sefcovic visits India.
The ongoing deliberations between the two sides emphasized the shared commitment to intensify dialogue and collaboration, with a focused determination to advance the negotiations towards a timely and mutually beneficial conclusion.
Piyush Goyal and Sefcovic carried out detailed deliberations across key areas of the proposed agreement. Both sides took note of the steady progress achieved across various negotiating tracks and agreed on the need to sustain the current momentum through continued exchanges.
"Both sides emphasized the strategic importance of concluding a fair, balanced, and ambitious agreement that aligns with their shared values, economic priorities, and commitment to a rules-based trading framework," the statement added.
The discussions also reaffirmed the strong political resolve to address pending issues through constructive engagement and to work towards a comprehensive, mutually advantageous outcome.
Sefcovic's visit underscores India's position as a reliable partner for the EU in advancing diversified, resilient, and future-oriented economic cooperation.
Both the sides expressed confidence and a renewed determination to intensify efforts toward the early conclusion of a modern, comprehensive, and mutually beneficial agreement. (end)
