Costa Warns US Against Interfering in EU Politics
(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa has stated that the United States should refrain from threatening to meddle in the EU’s “democratic life,” emphasizing that Brussels and Washington no longer share a unified perspective on global affairs.
His remarks were made in response to the newly released US National Security Strategy, which sharply criticizes the EU’s political and cultural direction and raises alarms about “civilizational erasure.”
The strategy accuses European institutions of overregulation, creating instability through migration policies, and suppressing political dissent. It also calls for “patriotic European parties” to defend democratic liberties and to engage in “unapologetic celebrations” of national identities.
Speaking in Paris on Monday, Costa acknowledged that the EU and the US remain partners but stressed that allies must avoid “threaten[ing] to interfere in the democratic life or the domestic political choices” of one another.
He further warned against US backing for “patriotic” parties, asserting that it is not Washington’s role to determine “which are the right parties and the wrong parties” for “European citizens.”
Costa argued that the US’s new foreign policy stance indicates a departure from multilateralism, a weakening of its commitment to the so-called “rules-based international order,” and the sidelining of climate action as a strategic priority.
Costa summarized the situation by noting, “We have differences in our worldviews.”
Tensions between Washington and Brussels have been mounting since US President Donald Trump returned to office in January. The two sides now frequently clash over issues such as trade, defense expenditures, and digital regulation.
