Developments in artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, several cricket matches, and ultra-conservative American activist Charlie Kirk, who was murdered in September, topped global searches on Google in 2025.

According to data published by the search engine on Thursday, referring to the last twelve months, Google's own AI assistant, Gemini, tops this ranking, followed by the cricket match between India and England, and the late Charlie Kirk.

Among the top ten searches worldwide, sports dominated, especially cricket, with the terms“India vs Australia” (5) and“Asia Cup” (7) joining the first entry mentioned above, although soccer also attracted interest, with“Club World Cup” (4).

Technology came in second place, with searches for the Chinese AI 'DeepSeek' (6) and the 'iPhone 17' (9), as well as Gemini, and in third place were searches for countries, possibly due to conflicts: Iran (8) and, together, Pakistan and India (10).

The murder of Kirk (1993-2025), who was shot in the neck during a political debate organized by his organization, Turning Point USA, at Utah Valley University on September 10, caused such a stir that it became the most searched news item on Google.

Kirk's death has also been the most searched for, ahead of those of rocker Ozzy Osborne and wrestler Hulk Hogan, as has his podcast, which has had more requests than 'New Heights' by football brothers Travis and Jason Kelce.

The United States dominated the list of most searched news stories, which included the government shutdown, the fires in Los Angeles, the ban on the social network TikTok, Zohran Mamdani's election victory in New York, and the dismantling of USAID, the foreign aid agency.

However, news about Iran, the election of Pope Leo XIV, Hurricane Melissa, which hit the Caribbean and the southern United States, and the hurricane and tsunami on the Kamchatka Peninsula (Russia) were also highly searched.

In the world of entertainment, highlights included actress Mikey Madison and her film Anora; the lyrics of Dtmf by Puerto Rican artist Bad Bunny; the series Monster: The Ed Gein Story and Squid Game 3; and the novel Regretting You by Colleen Hoover.

Meanwhile, in the“People” category, the most searched person is rapper d4vd, who is being investigated by US authorities after the body of a missing teenager was found in the trunk of his car.

Also on the list are Tyler Robinson, Kirk's alleged killer, and comedian Jimmy Kimmel, whose show was temporarily suspended for his comments about the activist.
