China urges effective Gaza ceasefire amid ongoing Israeli attacks

(MENAFN) China called on Thursday for the ceasefire in Gaza to be “effectively” enforced as Israeli attacks continue in the Palestinian enclave. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian described the situation as “very fragile” during a press briefing in Beijing, responding to questions about Israel’s latest military actions in Gaza, which violated the ceasefire agreement that took effect on October 10.

The recent strikes followed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s warning to “respond accordingly” after clashes in Rafah left Israeli soldiers injured. Lin expressed China’s hope that the ceasefire will be fully implemented, emphasizing that “the humanitarian crisis will be genuinely alleviated, and that peace and stability in the region will be restored as soon as possible.”

The first phase of the ceasefire plan involves releasing Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners, rebuilding Gaza, and establishing a new governance mechanism independent of Hamas.

Since October 2023, Israeli attacks in Gaza have reportedly resulted in more than 70,000 deaths, primarily women and children, and left nearly 171,000 people injured.
