Maduro is optimistic after phone call with Trump
(MENAFN) Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro confirmed on Wednesday that he held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump roughly ten days ago.
The call, initiated by the White House, was conducted “in a tone of respect,” Maduro said during an event broadcast by state-run Venezolana de Television.
Trump briefly acknowledged the conversation on Sunday but shared few specifics.
"I wouldn't say it went well or badly. It was a phone call," he said.
Maduro expressed cautious optimism about the potential for diplomatic engagement.
"If that call means that steps are being taken toward respectful dialogue between states, between countries, then dialogue is welcome, diplomacy is welcome, because we will always seek peace," he said, later reinforcing the sentiment in English:
"Welcome dialogue, welcome diplomats, welcome peace. Peace, yes. War, never, never in your life," he added.
The conversation took place amid rising military tensions and ongoing US operations targeting Venezuela.
Tensions escalated last Saturday following Trump’s declaration that the airspace “above and surrounding” Venezuela would be considered closed “in its entirety.”
Since August, the US has deployed a fleet of warships to the Caribbean and dispatched the world’s largest aircraft carrier in November, citing efforts to counter drug trafficking.
Reports indicate that since September, the US has conducted at least 21 strikes in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific on vessels suspected of carrying narcotics, resulting in at least 83 fatalities.
