Walmart Opens Second South Africa Store At Fourways Mall

Walmart will open its second South African store at Fourways Mall in Johannesburg on Friday, 28 November 2025, just days after launching its first outlet at Clearwater Mall in Roodepoort. The Fourways store is scheduled to open at 08:00, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by store manager Lunghani Lincoln Mathebula and the creation of 80 permanent jobs.

The arrival of the Fourways outlet underscores Walmart's drive to establish a footprint in South Africa under its own brand, rather than operating solely through its subsidiary Massmart. The Clearwater Mall launch earlier this month marked Walmart's debut in Africa under the Walmart name, signalling a strategic shift from Massmart-centric retail formats to the global retail giant's own model.

Customers shopping at Fourways can expect a carryover of many items that proved popular at Clearwater Mall. Offerings will include imported confectionery such as Pop-Tarts, Swedish Fish, Nerds and Sour Patch Kids, international soft drinks like Dr Pepper and Fanta variants, premium meats including Sparta marbled sirloin steaks and Deli-Co lamb lollies, as well as collectible toys such as Fuggler plushies and Hot Wheels. The store will also stock a broad range of groceries, household essentials, electronics, apparel, beauty products and other everyday items.

Walmart has rolled out an Africa-version of its shopping app alongside the brick-and-mortar stores. The app offers customers living within a five-kilometre radius of the Fourways outlet access to delivery within 60 minutes, aligning digital convenience with traditional retail service. This hybrid model aims to give Walmart a competitive edge over established South African retailers and online platforms.

Walmart's expansion follows years of operating in the region through Massmart, which it acquired fully in 2022. Massmart continues its existing brands such as Game, Makro and Builders Warehouse, while Walmart now tests whether its own retail format can succeed in South Africa's competitive market. The Fourways store represents the first major incremental step in what appears to be a cautious but ambitious rollout plan under the Walmart banner.

Initial price comparisons indicate Walmart may undercut major local chains on everyday grocery baskets, reinforcing its“Every Day Low Prices” philosophy that officials say will give customers stable, affordable pricing without waiting for promotional periods. That pledge seems central to Walmart's direct-entry strategy, as it seeks to establish trust and attract price-conscious shoppers during the peak holiday shopping season.
