Rubio says progress made in Ukraine negotiations, work remains ongoing

(MENAFN) US Secretary of State Marco Rubio described recent discussions with Ukraine over a potential deal to end the Russia-Ukraine war as productive, though he stressed that “more work to be done” remains.

The Florida meeting included a Ukrainian delegation led by National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov, who replaced the previous chief negotiator, Andriy Yermak, following an anti-corruption raid on his home. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, were also present. Witkoff is scheduled to travel to Moscow next week for further talks.

The negotiations are part of two weeks of intensive diplomatic activity that followed the leak of a 28-point US peace plan, which sparked concern in Ukraine and among European allies for appearing to favor Russia, which invaded Ukraine nearly four years ago.

“It's not just about the terms that ends fighting,” Rubio said in Hallandale Beach, north of Miami. “It's about also the terms that set up Ukraine for long-term prosperity… I think we built on that today, but there's more work to be done.” He added that the goal of the peace talks is to ensure Ukraine remains “sovereign, independent and prosperous.”

Umerov said the discussions focused on “the future of Ukraine, about the security of Ukraine, about no repetition of aggression of Ukraine, about prosperity of Ukraine, about how to rebuild Ukraine.” He added, “US is hearing us… US is supporting us. US is working beside us.” He later described the talks as “productive and successful,” while Rubio called them “very productive and useful.”

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said the discussions were “going along well” and expressed optimism that a deal could be reached to end the conflict. He confirmed that Witkoff, and possibly Kushner, would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow to discuss the revised peace plan.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky also praised the talks on social media, stating: “It is important that the talks have a constructive dynamic and that all issues were discussed openly and with a clear focus on ensuring Ukraine's sovereignty and national interests.” He expressed gratitude to the US and Trump for their efforts to help end the war.
