Thousands Of Afghan Arrivals Marked For Security Review In U.S.

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) U.S. homeland security data show nearly 7,000 Afghan arrivals since 2021 were flagged for possible security issues, prompting renewed political scrutiny and review.

Nearly 7,000 Afghan refugees who entered the United States since 2021 were flagged for potential security concerns, according to Department of Homeland Security data reviewed by the New York Post. More than 5,000 were marked for possible national-security issues.

DHS records show another 956 Afghans triggered public-safety alerts, while about 900 were flagged for potential fraud. U.S. officials say many cases have been resolved, but 885 individuals remained under review as of September.

The disclosure follows the recent arrest of an Afghan refugee accused of killing a National Guard member in Washington, a case that renewed scrutiny of the Biden administration's vetting procedures.

Republican Senator Chuck Grassley, who obtained the DHS data, said the findings highlight“persistent failures” in background checks during the 2021 evacuation. A recent DHS inspector-general report also found screening efforts were“fragmented and inconsistent.”

The United States has relocated more than 183,000 Afghans since the fall of Kabul, including former local partners.

U.S. oversight officials warn that the rush to evacuate Afghans in 2021 often bypassed standard security protocols, leaving unresolved risks and fueling an ongoing political debate over the country's refugee-screening system.
