Security Guard Attacked by Bear in Tokyo

(MENAFN) A bear ambushed a security guard inside a public toilet facility adjacent to a train station in Gunma prefecture, northwest of Tokyo, during the early morning hours Friday, police confirmed.

The 69-year-old victim reported spotting the animal gazing into the restroom as he prepared to exit the facility near the rail stop, media reported.

The guard sustained minor lacerations to his right leg during the encounter. After tumbling backward, he repelled the animal through defensive kicking, prompting the bear—measured at approximately 1 to 1.5 meters in length—to retreat from the scene.

He immediately rushed to a neighboring police box to file an incident report.

Japan has witnessed escalating bear presence and human confrontations, driven partially by depleted food resources within their wilderness territories.

From April through October, authorities logged 197 bear attack casualties, nearing the fiscal 2023 annual peak of 219 documented incidents, preliminary data from the Environment Ministry indicates.

The attack underscores intensifying wildlife-human conflict as bears increasingly venture into populated zones searching for sustenance amid habitat food scarcity.

Officials continue monitoring bear activity across Japanese prefectures as encounters spike beyond historical norms, raising public safety concerns in both rural and semi-urban communities.
