Two Western-sanctioned tankers get struck by explosions in Black Sea
(MENAFN) Two Western-sanctioned tankers were reportedly struck by explosions in the Black Sea on Friday, according to Turkish authorities.
The Kairos, a Gambian-flagged vessel heading to the Russian port of Novorossiysk, caught fire 28 nautical miles (51 km) off Türkiye’s coast due to unspecified “external factors,” as stated by the Turkish Directorate General for Maritime Affairs.
All 25 crew members, most of whom are Chinese nationals, were rescued by the Turkish Coast Guard. Footage released by officials shows the ship engulfed in flames.
Turkish Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said that information from the vessel “indicated a possible mine strike,” noting that initial assessments pointed to “external impact.”
A second Gambian-flagged tanker, the Virat, reported a “strike” 35 nautical miles (65 km) off Türkiye’s coast. Local reports indicate the ship communicated that it was attacked by drones. Uraloglu confirmed that rescue vessels were dispatched to evacuate the tanker’s 20 crew members.
Photos released by authorities show a breach in the Virat’s hull, highlighting the damage sustained.
