Hamas condemns abuse of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails
(MENAFN) Hamas issued a statement Thursday denouncing what it described as the systematic killing and torture of Palestinian detainees in Israeli prisons, urging urgent international action to halt these abuses.
Citing human rights sources, the group claimed that 94 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody since the outbreak of Israel’s military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. “This reflects an organized criminal approach that has turned these prisons into direct killing grounds to eliminate our people,” Hamas stated on its official Telegram channel.
The organization alleged that prisoners are subjected to severe mistreatment, including “severe beatings, scalding with boiling water, attacks by dogs, and sexual assaults,” citing firsthand accounts and human rights reports. Hamas described these practices as “full-fledged war crimes under international humanitarian law that expose the brutal nature of the (Israeli) occupation’s regime.”
Hamas called on the international community, the UN, and human rights organizations to apply pressure on Israel to end these alleged crimes and ensure detainees’ rights as protected under international law.
A report submitted to the UN Committee Against Torture by Israeli human rights groups detailed a range of abuses, including sexual assaults with objects, baton beatings, dog attacks, exposure to extreme cold, deprivation of food and sleep, and denial of medical care. At least 94 Palestinians have reportedly died in custody since October 2023.
Israel denies that systemic abuses occur, but human rights organizations reject this, warning that urgent international intervention is needed to prevent further alleged “systematic crimes” against detainees. More than 10,000 Palestinians, including women and children, are currently held in Israeli prisons, according to multiple sources.
The issue has intensified amid the wider conflict in Gaza, where nearly 70,000 people, mostly women and children, have been killed and 171,000 injured since October 2023, leaving large parts of the territory devastated.
