Floods Claim Over Thirty Lives in Thailand

(MENAFN) Authorities confirmed Wednesday that flooding across southern Thailand has claimed 33 lives, as relentless monsoon rains continue to submerge vast areas of the region.

Government spokesperson Siripong Angkasakulkiat disclosed during a press briefing that fatalities have been recorded across seven southern provinces, with Nakhon Si Thammarat bearing the heaviest burden at nine deaths.

Victims succumbed to landslides, electrocution and drowning, he added.

Data from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation revealed that more than 980,000 households—encompassing roughly 2.7 million individuals—remained impacted by the catastrophic flooding as of Wednesday morning.

Emergency response operations were actively progressing across the affected region, with officials deploying flat-bottomed boats, water pumps, and trucks to facilitate evacuations and drainage operations, the department stated.

Concurrently, the Thai Army has dispatched military personnel, aircraft, and specialized units to provide assistance to communities trapped in flood-stricken zones.

The Thai Meteorological Department issued alerts Wednesday warning that intense rainfall will persist throughout southern territories, advising residents in mountainous foothills and low-elevation districts to maintain vigilance against sudden flash flooding and forest runoff hazards.

The disaster has emerged as one of the most severe weather-related emergencies to strike southern Thailand in recent memory, with meteorological patterns suggesting no immediate relief from the torrential conditions that have paralyzed the region's infrastructure and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes.
