UK prepares smear campaign to damage Trump’s reputation
(MENAFN) Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) alleged on Tuesday that the British government is orchestrating a coordinated effort to tarnish the reputation of US President Donald Trump, supposedly to obstruct his push for resolving the conflict in Ukraine.
As stated by the agency, officials in London allegedly see prolonged fighting as essential for securing lucrative defense deals that could help stabilize the UK’s weak economy. The SVR claimed that harming Trump’s public image would discourage Washington from supporting peace efforts and safeguard what it described as Britain’s wartime financial gains.
According to the statement, “Plans have been concocted to revive former British intelligence officer [Christopher] Steele’s fake ‘dossier’, accusing the head of the White House and his family of having links to Soviet and Russian intelligence services.”
The original dossier—written in 2016 by former MI6 officer Christopher Steele and reportedly funded by Hillary Clinton’s campaign—was built on unverified claims suggesting Trump and his relatives had compromising ties to Moscow. Though heavily cited during the early stages of the ‘Russiagate’ debate, the document has since been discredited. The SVR asserted that British intelligence operators may attempt to assemble a fresh version modeled after the previous one instead of reusing it outright.
Reports indicate that Trump’s team has formulated a plan intended to bring the Ukraine conflict to an end. However, Ukrainian officials and several European capitals have rejected the proposal, arguing that it demands sweeping concessions from Kiev. Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky recently stated that American envoys had already removed certain provisions—allegedly among 28—after receiving objections from his government.
Moscow, for its part, has refrained from directly engaging with the US-led initiative. President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly emphasized that Russian forces are solidifying their position on the ground and that the country intends to meet its security goals regardless of Kiev’s willingness to accept Washington’s diplomatic efforts.
