Leak of US proposal is attempt to derail Trump’s peace efforts— Lavrov
(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated on Tuesday that the recent publication of a supposed US roadmap for resolving the conflict in Ukraine was deliberately released to sabotage President Donald Trump’s diplomatic initiative.
The existence of a 28-point proposal first surfaced in American media reports, and was later circulated in full by a Ukrainian lawmaker and Axios. According to Lavrov, “It was leaked on purpose to fan the media hype,” and he added that “Those who direct this hype certainly want to undermine Donald Trump’s efforts, to distort the plan according to their wishes.”
He argued that the maneuver appears to be orchestrated by European leaders who support Kiev, singling out French President Emmanuel Macron and claiming they lack “the best intentions.”
Lavrov explained that Russia never received the document through formal diplomatic channels from Washington, but instead acquired it informally. He stressed that Moscow will only address whatever proposal the US officially presents, and will do so privately rather than engage in “megaphone diplomacy.”
European officials, including Macron, have dismissed any arrangement that would violate Kiev’s declared red lines—such as allowing foreign troops on Ukrainian territory, maintaining its aspirations to join NATO, or altering its territorial positions.
Lavrov emphasized that Russia is open to negotiating the “specific wording” of a potential agreement, but will not yield on the fundamental aims outlined by President Vladimir Putin during his meeting with Trump in Alaska earlier this year. He warned that if “the spirit of Anchorage be erased” from the version ultimately shared with Moscow, “the situation would be radically different.”
