Russia Reviews US Peace Plan
(MENAFN) Russia is currently assessing the US-drafted peace initiative aimed at resolving the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, and anticipates that all parties involved will make significant changes, presidential adviser Yury Ushakov told journalists on Monday.
He noted that “many” elements of the original US proposal “appear to be acceptable” to Moscow.
Earlier this month, Washington submitted its plan to both Moscow and Kiev. While the full details have not been officially disclosed by the media, reports indicate that the proposal could include a de facto acknowledgment of Russian control over Crimea and Donbass, limitations on Kiev’s military capabilities, and a recommendation for Ukraine to refrain from joining NATO.
Ushakov mentioned that Russia has received a “signal” from the US indicating a willingness to discuss the proposal in a face-to-face meeting at some stage, though no formal arrangements have been made yet.
He emphasized that “it will, of course, be subject to revision and modification – on our side, and surely on the Ukrainian side as well, and on the American and European sides. This is a very serious issue.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously suggested that the US proposal could serve as the “basis of the final peace settlement.”
Over the weekend, the EU introduced its own demands for a future peace agreement, which appear to conflict with the reported elements of the US plan.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen declared on Sunday that Kiev’s military should not face limitations and that the EU should hold a “central” role in any settlement.
She further stressed that Ukraine’s borders cannot be altered “by force.”
