Poland Seeks Clarification from Israeli Ambassador

(MENAFN) Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced on Monday that he summoned Israel’s ambassador to Poland to seek clarification and an official correction following a social media post by Yad Vashem, Israel's memorial institution for Holocaust victims.

The original post, shared on Sunday on the US social media platform X, stated that “Poland was the first country where Jews were forced to wear a distinctive badge in order to isolate them from the surrounding population.”

Criticism quickly arose in Warsaw due to the absence of any mention of the Nazi occupation of Poland or the fact that the measure was enforced by German authorities.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the post risked conveying the incorrect impression that the Polish state or society initiated the badge requirement, rather than the German occupiers who controlled political and civic life from 1939 to 1945.

Within hours, Yad Vashem added a note beneath the post clarifying, “As many users have noticed and as clearly stated in the article linked above, this was done at the behest of the German authorities.”

Subsequently, Dani Dayan, chairman of Yad Vashem, issued an additional clarification in response to Sikorski’s request, urging that the post be republished in a way that explicitly includes the historical context of occupation.

“Yad Vashem presents the historical realities of Nazism and WWII, including countries under German occupation, control, or influence. Poland was indeed under German occupation. This is clearly reflected in our materials. Any other interpretation is a misreading of our commitment to accuracy,” he wrote on X.
