Germany warns of escalation over Israel-Lebanon ceasefire violations

(MENAFN) According to reports, Germany on Monday cautioned that tensions could escalate further as Israel continues to violate the ceasefire in Lebanon.

Martin Giese, a spokesperson for Germany’s Foreign Ministry, told a Berlin press briefing: “We have taken note of reports … about an attack on Beirut. In general, I can say that we have repeatedly emphasized, and continue to emphasize, that a politically negotiated solution, which presupposes the disarmament of Hezbollah, can bring about lasting peace between Lebanon and Israel.”

He added: “Such solutions must both serve Israel's security interests and respect Lebanese security and territorial sovereignty. Therefore, we call on all parties to adhere to the ceasefire agreement and exercise restraint. The only important thing is that further escalation is prevented…”

Giese’s statements followed an Israeli strike in southern Beirut that killed five people and injured 28 others. Israel said the attack targeted Hezbollah’s chief of staff, Ali Tabatabai. Reports noted that Israel has carried out multiple strikes in southern Beirut since the ceasefire took effect.

Tensions in southern Lebanon have been rising for weeks, with the Israeli military conducting near-daily air raids on Lebanese territory, claiming they target Hezbollah members and infrastructure. According to the Lebanese Health Ministry, Israeli fire has killed at least 331 people and injured 945 since the ceasefire began on November 27, 2024. The UN peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL) also reported over 10,000 Israeli air and ground violations.
