Trump Reveals Plans to Hold Near-Term Talks with Maduro
(MENAFN) President Donald Trump announced Friday that he plans to speak soon with Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, amid rising speculation that the United States could consider a military strike against the South American nation.
"I will speak with him in a not too distant future," Trump said during an interview with media.
When pressed on the content of the forthcoming discussion, Trump declined to provide details. "I just don't do that," he said.
"I can't tell you what I'm going to tell him, but I have something very specific to say," Trump added, reiterating a list of alleged grievances against Maduro, including accusations of drug trafficking.
Earlier this week, Maduro warned that any U.S. military action would mark Trump's “political end,” claiming that advisors close to the president are “provoking” a conflict that could push him “to a cliff.”
He elaborated: "They want President Trump to make the most serious mistake of his entire life and set himself militarily against Venezuela, which would be the political end of his leadership and name, and he is being pressured and provoked."
Maduro further asserted: "This 'provocation' comes from his adversaries and known enemies ... but also from people around him that are making calculations over the post-Trump era and it doesn't matter if they cause him harm.”
Trump also emphasized that Venezuela remains open to diplomacy, stating that the country is prepared for “face-to-face” dialogue with Washington. He stressed that the pursuit of "communal points" remains the "invariable" position of his administration.
Tensions between the two nations escalated after Trump ordered a U.S. military deployment in the Caribbean this August aimed at disrupting drug trafficking networks linked to Maduro.
Caracas insists that U.S. operations are intended to force a regime change. Since the deployment, the U.S. military has carried out 21 strikes on vessels alleged to be transporting drugs, reportedly killing 83 people. Trump has also hinted at potential strikes against drug trafficking targets on Venezuelan soil.
