S. Korea Brings Gangwon Wildfire Under Control
(MENAFN) South Korean authorities confirmed on Friday that they successfully extinguished a wildfire that consumed roughly 360,000 square meters (89 acres) of land in the northeastern province of Gangwon after burning for 17 hours.
The fire ignited Thursday afternoon on a hillside in Inje, about 132 kilometers (82 miles) east of Seoul. Responding rapidly, officials deployed hundreds of personnel, more than two dozen helicopters, and dozens of pieces of firefighting equipment to contain the blaze, media reported, citing officials.
“No injuries were reported,” authorities said. As a precaution, 12 residents from nearby homes were evacuated while emergency crews battled the flames.
The incident has prompted a full investigation to determine the fire’s cause and assess the total damage to the area. Local authorities stressed the importance of preparedness during the dry season, noting that even a single spark can quickly spread across the region’s forested hills.
The wildfire is the latest in a series of seasonal fires that have challenged South Korean firefighting teams in recent years, highlighting both the vulnerability of rural areas and the resources required to control large-scale incidents.
