South Korea, Japan Grapple with Surge in Flu Cases

(MENAFN) South Korea and Japan are confronting explosive surges in influenza infections, according to reports from local media outlets Friday.

South Korean flu cases have climbed steadily over four consecutive weeks, skyrocketing to approximately 14 times the levels recorded during the corresponding period last year, South Korean media reported. Health officials documented a sharp 30.8% week-over-week spike, with school-aged children and teenagers bearing the brunt of infections.

Authorities are strongly encouraging citizens to obtain both influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations before winter fully arrives.

Across the sea, Japan has hit the nation's highest influenza warning threshold at the most rapid pace witnessed in ten years, Japanese media reported. Medical institutions—roughly 3,000 facilities nationwide—registered approximately 145,526 patients during the past week, with Miyagi province in northeastern Japan reporting the densest concentration of cases.

The current patient count represents a 1.73-fold increase from the prior week, Japanese health authorities confirmed. The warning threshold was triggered five weeks ahead of last season's timeline, underscoring the outbreak's unprecedented velocity.
