Türkiye Urges Revival of Istanbul Peace Talks
(MENAFN) Türkiye argues that putting the Istanbul process on the Ukraine conflict into action through “a comprehensive framework that can address acute problems” would be advantageous, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stated during a Wednesday press briefing alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Highlighting that Türkiye had previously hosted three negotiation rounds between Russia and Ukraine during which “progress was made,” Erdogan noted that “the parties were able to directly address ceasefire and peace talks, as well as military matters.”
He emphasized that “We consider all of these to be valuable steps.”
According to Erdogan, “The Istanbul talks constitute an important milestone in diplomatic efforts at a time when the devastating effects of the (Russia-Ukraine) war are deepening,” stressing the crucial role of Türkiye’s mediation in attempts to halt the ongoing conflict.
He pointed out that intensifying strikes on energy infrastructure — and the accompanying civilian casualties — are inflicting irreversible harm on both sides of the war.
Erdogan reiterated Ankara’s willingness to engage with Moscow on “any proposals that would accelerate a ceasefire, paving the way for just, lasting peace.”
He concluded by stressing that Türkiye anticipates all actors seeking to end the bloodshed between Russia and Ukraine to adopt a constructive and supportive approach toward the Istanbul process.
