Ukraine Reports Nearly Twenty Fatalities in Overnight Russian Strike

(MENAFN) At least 19 people were killed and 66 injured early Wednesday when a Russian strike ripped through residential districts of the western Ukrainian city of Ternopil, authorities said, revising upward the toll from one of the largest combined drone-missile assaults in months.

The State Emergency Service reported that crews pulled 45 survivors from collapsed buildings as fires erupted across multiple impact zones. More than 190 responders and 38 pieces of equipment were deployed to contain the damage, which hit apartment blocks as well as industrial and warehouse sites.

Condemning the barrage, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Moscow’s actions reflect “how Russia’s ‘peace plans’ look in reality."

According to a statement from the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 48 missiles and 476 drones from several axes, concentrating its assault on the Lviv, Ternopil and Kharkiv regions. Air defenses intercepted or suppressed 483 of the 524 aerial threats detected — including 442 drones, 34 Kh-101 cruise missiles and seven Kalibr missiles.

Air Force officials said the strikes began late Tuesday, involving Shahed-type drones, Gerbera-type UAVs and cruise missiles fired from Russian territory and occupied Crimea. In total, seven missiles and 34 attack drones hit 14 sites, while debris fell across six additional locations.

Initial reports from Ternopil listed 10 dead and 37 injured, but the figures rose as search operations advanced through the night.

Moscow asserted that its forces executed a “massive strike with long-range precision weapons” targeting what it claimed were Ukrainian military-industrial and energy facilities in the country’s west. The Russian Defense Ministry said the attack — involving Kinzhal hypersonic missiles and attack UAVs — was carried out “in response” to alleged Ukrainian strikes on civilian areas inside Russia.

The ministry added that “all designated targets were hit,” a statement that could not be independently confirmed.
