NEW YORK, Nov 19 (KUNA) -- Kuwait's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Tareq Al-Banai said Wednesday that caring for children is a national priority that is rooted in Kuwait's humanitarian value.
Speaking to KUNA ahead of the World Children Day marked on November 20, this year's theme is "my day, my rights"
Al-Banai said the UN celebrates the occasion through activities that strengthen children's voice, promoting their rights and ensuring a safe environment that supports their growth and development, amid global calls for stronger efforts to protect children everywhere.
He reaffirmed Kuwait's steadfast commitment to safeguarding the rights of all children and ensuring they are raised in a safe environment, stressing the importance to bolster joint international efforts to protect children from all forms of violence and exploitation.
He also called for promising their right to quality education, healthcare and psychosocial support in line with Kuwait's international obligations, particularly the Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC)
Al-Banai pointed out to the increasing urgency of safeguarding children in digital space, noting that cybersecurity has become the first line of defense against online abuse, stressing the importance to ensure a safe environment for them as well as promoting awareness.
UNICEF and global partners have called for accelerated action to protect and uphold the rights of every child without discrimination.
Countries around the world mark the occasion with awareness programs and events involving government and community organizations to highlight the importance of child welfare and enhance family and societal understanding of children's rights.
The UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child on November 20, 1959, the same date on which it adopted the UNCRC in 1989. (end)
