Sudanese forces report progress in Kordofan fighting
(MENAFN) The Sudanese army claimed significant advances across the Kordofan region Tuesday following renewed fighting with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
A military statement said army operations were conducted “with high efficiency,” inflicting “heavy losses in personnel and equipment” on the RSF. Several “vital sites” were reportedly secured, with forces “redeployed according to a planned operational strategy.”
The army vowed to continue its campaign against the RSF “until the country is cleansed of rebellion and foreign agendas.”
Earlier Tuesday, the Joint Force of Armed Movements, a coalition allied with the army, said it had regained control of the Abu Sunun and Abu Qaoud areas in North Kordofan. Darfur Governor Minni Arko Minnawi also reported that army forces and allied fighters had defeated the RSF in Jabal Abu Sunun and surrounding areas.
The RSF, however, claimed it repelled army attacks in Jabal Abu Sunun, Jabal Issa, and Al-Ayyara, west of the provincial capital El-Obeid. On Monday, the army said it had retaken Um Sayala in northern North Kordofan from the RSF.
Following the RSF seizure of El-Fasher, the North Darfur capital, last month, fighting has spread to new fronts, particularly in Kordofan in central and southern Sudan. The RSF now controls all five Darfur states, while the army holds most of the remaining 13 states, including Khartoum.
Darfur covers about one-fifth of Sudan’s territory, though the majority of the country’s 50 million people live in army-controlled areas. The ongoing conflict between the army and RSF, which began in April 2023, has killed at least 40,000 people and displaced 12 million, according to the World Health Organization.
