Markus Gottschling researches and teaches literature, rhetoric
He is a research associate at the Seminar for General Rhetoric and responsible for the academic coordination of the RHET AI Center. There, he also heads the "Communicative Competence" working group. He regularly develops and teaches training formats on science communication – for the RHET AI Center as well as in the certificate program "Science Communication and Media Competence," which he oversees. Since 2025, he has been co-director of the RHET AI Coalition, an international research network at the intersection of rhetoric and artificial intelligence
His current research interests include the interplay between rhetoric and generative AI, particularly with regard to co-creative writing and the acquisition of rhetorical AI literacy. He also investigates the potential of fictionalization in science communication.
Publications at the intersection of rhetoric and science communication on methods of recontextualizing scientific knowledge ( Recontextualized Knowledge. Rhetoric – Situation – Science Communication. Edited with Olaf Kramer), on the conditions of science communication in the humanities, and in literary studies, for example, on the relationship between space (theory) and narration (dissertation on getting lost in the polar regions of literature ). Journalistic publications in Akzente, DUZ magazine, Science Notes magazine, and on wissenschaftskommunikation.
