US Plans Labeling Cartel de los Soles as Terrorist Organization
(MENAFN) The United States plans to classify the Venezuela-based Cartel de los Soles as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO), Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared on Sunday.
“Cartel de los Soles by and with other designated FTOs including Tren de Aragua and the Sinaloa Cartel are responsible for terrorist violence throughout our hemisphere as well as for trafficking drugs into the United States and Europe,” Rubio stated in an official press release regarding the measure, which is scheduled to take effect on Nov. 24.
He accused Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his top officials of orchestrating the cartel’s operations, asserting that they did not “represent Venezuela’s legitimate government.”
Rubio added, “The United States will continue using all available tools to protect our national security interests and deny funding and resources to narco-terrorists.”
Earlier this year, the US State Department had already labeled several Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations in February, granting intelligence agencies expanded legal authority to execute covert missions.
US President Donald Trump has maintained strikes on ships in both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, targeting vessels he and his senior aides claim are engaged in transporting drugs to the United States.
Trump has also threatened measures against President Maduro, alleging his involvement in drug trafficking.
In recent months, Trump has increasingly broadened US military operations across Latin America, deploying Marines, warships, fighter jets, bomber aircraft, submarines, and drones.
Reports indicate that the USS Gerald Ford aircraft carrier has arrived in the Caribbean as part of this strategic deployment.
