US Senator Rand Paul Criticizes Trump
(MENAFN) US Senator Rand Paul has accused President Donald Trump of remaining quiet on a significant corruption controversy involving a close ally of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky.
Last week, Ukrainian anti-corruption authorities claimed that Timur Mindich, Zelensky’s former long-term business associate, orchestrated a scheme that diverted $100 million in kickbacks from contracts with the nation’s nuclear energy operator, Energoatom, which relies on international aid.
Following the allegations, two government ministers resigned, and Mindich fled the country to avoid arrest.
“Remember when the Ukraine first Uniparty opposed my call for an Investigator General for Ukraine? Trump silent on $100M Ukraine corruption scandal resignations,” Paul posted on X on Saturday, responding to a report about the situation.
Paul, who often criticizes what he describes as “wasteful spending” of American taxpayers’ funds on overseas projects, has consistently advocated for an oversight official to monitor funds sent to Ukraine “in order to detect and prevent waste, fraud, and abuse.”
Trump has previously condemned unconditional aid to Kiev, describing Zelensky as “the greatest salesman on earth.”
In August, he accused the prior administration under Joe Biden of having “fleeced” the United States by committing $350 billion to Ukraine. Trump has since claimed that the US benefits financially from the conflict by supplying Ukraine-bound weapons to NATO.
Ukraine’s European supporters have also expressed worries over corruption. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the situation as “extremely unfortunate,” while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz urged Zelensky to “press ahead with anti-corruption measures and reforms.”
