Iran Ceases All Uranium Enrichment Operations
(MENAFN) Iran has ceased all uranium enrichment operations following attacks on its nuclear infrastructure, Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi revealed Sunday, even as he defended Tehran's sovereign right to pursue such activities.
Speaking at an international conference in the Iranian capital, Araghchi disclosed the suspension to media, the country's official news agency, stating: "At present, no uranium enrichment is being carried out in Iran as our enrichment facilities have come under attack."
The foreign minister forcefully asserted that Iran's entitlement to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes remains absolute and must be acknowledged globally, including by Washington. "Undeniable" was how he characterized the nation's right to peaceful nuclear energy, demanding recognition from the international community, including the United States.
Araghchi categorically denied the existence of any covert nuclear operations, emphasizing that every facility operates transparently under the watchful eye of the International Atomic Energy Agency. All Iranian nuclear sites remain subject to the agency's oversight, he confirmed.
Regarding prospects for renewed diplomatic engagement with Washington, the foreign minister expressed deep skepticism about American intentions. He characterized the U.S. government's current posture as fundamentally incompatible with genuine, balanced negotiations that respect both nations' interests.
"What we have witnessed so far from the Americans has, in fact, been an effort to dictate completely maximal and excessive demands," he said.
The diplomatic pathway had shown promise through five rounds of indirect negotiations facilitated by Oman, focusing on nuclear matters and sanctions relief. A sixth session was being organized when Israel executed devastating airstrikes on June 13, targeting nuclear and military installations across Iran. The assault claimed the lives of senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians.
Nine days later, on June 22, U.S. forces launched their own strikes against Iranian nuclear facilities at Natanz, Fordow, and Isfahan.
