Trump Demands Release of Jeffrey Epstein Files in Stunning Reversal
(MENAFN) In a dramatic policy reversal, President Donald Trump announced Sunday that Republican House members must vote to disclose all government records connected to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The shift follows months during which Trump actively pressured GOP legislators to block the documents' publication—a collection commonly referred to as the Epstein files.
"We have nothing to hide, and it's time to move on from this Democrat hoax perpetrated by radical left Lunatics in order to deflect from the great success of the Republican Party, including our recent Victory on the Democrat 'Shutdown,'" Trump declared via his Truth Social platform.
"Nobody cared about Jeffrey Epstein when he was alive and, if the Democrats had anything, they would have released it before our landslide election victory. Some 'members' of the Republican Party are being 'used,' and we can't let that happen," he continued.
The president's pivot occurred days after Trump severed his political alliance with longtime supporter Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene on Friday, following her refusal to comply with his directive opposing the files' release.
Speaking to journalists Sunday, Trump labeled Green a "traitor" and declared "I don't think anybody cares about her," signaling the complete collapse of their previously tight relationship over the Epstein dispute. He subsequently posted on social media that Green "is working overtime to try and portray herself as a victim when, in actuality, she is the cause of all of her own problems."
Trump's abandonment of his sustained opposition to the document disclosure may indicate the House is virtually guaranteed to approve their release as early as Tuesday, after four GOP members joined all Democratic representatives last week in advancing the measure to a floor vote.
"I don't care! All I do care about is that Republicans get back on point," Trump wrote on Truth.
Representative Thomas Massie, another Republican now at odds with Trump, stated Sunday he anticipates securing a veto-proof supermajority supporting the files' publication.
"I think we could have a deluge of Republicans. There could be 100 or more," the Kentucky Republican told media. "You will have voted to protect pedophiles if you don't vote to release these files, and the president can't protect you then."
Epstein died in his New York City detention facility in 2019 while awaiting trial on federal charges. He had previously entered a guilty plea and received a 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor.
Survivors continue demanding accountability and legal mechanisms to confront their abusers and secure justice.
