Trump Calls for Pardoning Netanyahu

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has advocated for a complete pardon for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding his ongoing corruption case, through a letter addressed to Israeli President Isaac Herzog on Wednesday.

Netanyahu is currently facing three separate criminal investigations, with accusations including bribery, fraud, and breach of trust.

The bribery charges could result in a prison term of up to ten years, whereas both the fraud and breach of trust allegations carry a maximum of three years each.

”While I absolutely respect the independence of the Israeli Justice System, and its requirements, I believe that the ‘case’ against Bibi, who has fought alongside me for a long time, including against the very tough adversary of Israel, Iran, is a political, unjustified prosecution,” Trump stated in a formal letter released by Herzog’s office on Wednesday.

He added, “I hereby call on you to fully pardon Benjamin Netanyahu.”

Although Trump has frequently voiced his support for a pardon, this letter marks the first formal appeal to Herzog and is considered an uncommon direct intervention by a US leader in the domestic legal affairs of a close ally.

According to reports, Herzog’s office responded by emphasizing that, while Trump is highly respected, any pardon request must follow standard procedures.

Only the accused, their legal counsel, or a family member can formally submit such a request. So far, neither Netanyahu nor any close associates have done so.
