US House Ends Record Government Shutdown

(MENAFN) The US House of Representatives has passed legislation to finance the government through January 30, 2026, setting the stage to conclude the nation’s longest-ever government shutdown.

According to a new agency, the measure was approved 222–209, with six Democrats joining Republicans, who maintain a narrow majority in the chamber.

Two GOP members opposed the bill. President Donald Trump signed the legislation into law later on Wednesday evening.

The federal shutdown began on October 1 due to a disagreement over health tax credits under the Affordable Care Act, which Democrats aimed to extend into the following year.

Weeks of intense blame-shifting occurred as federal employee layoffs increased and flight cancellations grew. Eventually, eight Senate Democrats broke party lines on Monday, joining Republicans to reopen the government.

Several leading Democrats criticized their colleagues for aligning with “MAGA extremists” in both chambers. California Governor Gavin Newsom wrote on X, “We saw capitulation and a betrayal of working Americans.

The American people need more from their leaders.”

Those Democrats who voted against party lines defended their choice, stating that the shutdown’s impact on ordinary Americans was severe. Senator Jeanne Shaheen commented, “Staying in shutdown mode was not getting us anywhere.”

Prior to the House vote, Congresswoman Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, another Democrat who broke ranks, said, “The fight to stop runaway health insurance premiums won’t be won by holding hungry Americans hostage.”

Trump, who had blamed Democrats for over 40 days of disruption, remarked that the shutdown had made them “look very bad” as he signed the bill to reopen the government.
