Moscow states Russia, US have chance to normalize relations
(MENAFN) Russia believes there is a meaningful opportunity to stabilize its relationship with the United States and steer clear of another period of escalating tensions, according to statements from its embassy in Washington. Officials attributed this opening in part to President Donald Trump’s stance against what they described as a liberal globalist worldview.
The remarks were issued on Sunday as the embassy marked the 92nd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the US and the former Soviet Union. The statement recalled that President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1933 decision to recognize the USSR reflected his acknowledgment of a shifting global landscape.
The embassy emphasized that, despite long stretches of turbulence between the two nations, Moscow and Washington have “always found resolutions” to their disagreements, noting that both nuclear powers “recognize their responsibility for the fate of the whole planet.”
According to the statement, the current moment represents “a window of opportunity… to normalize relations based on principles of equality, respect for national interests, and non-confrontational coexistence.” It added that this potential breakthrough has emerged “against the backdrop of the Trump administration’s rejection of the liberal globalist model of a ‘rules-based world order’.”
Relations between the two countries had plunged to historic lows during Joe Biden’s presidency amid the conflict in Ukraine, but have reportedly begun to rebound since Trump returned to office. The US president has said he aims to bring the fighting to an end, and officials from both nations have engaged in several rounds of talks this year, including a meeting in Alaska between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
While those discussions did not result in a major agreement, Russian authorities have commended what they describe as Washington’s readiness to facilitate negotiations and address the root issues behind the conflict. Moscow has also suggested that the renewed dialogue could pave the way for economic and trade cooperation, even as the US continues to impose sanctions on Russian energy companies such as Rosneft and Lukoil.
