S. Korea arrests three thousand people tied to online sex crimes

(MENAFN) According to reports, South Korean authorities have detained more than 3,000 individuals over the past year in connection with online sexual offenses, with almost half of the suspects being teenagers.

From November 2024 to October 2025, the National Police Agency (NPA) documented 3,411 cases of online sexual abuse, resulting in the detention of 3,557 people, of whom 221 were formally arrested.

In terms of the types of offenses, deepfake-related crimes accounted for 35.2% of cases, followed by videos involving children and adolescents at 34.3%, and illegal recordings at 19.4%.

Among the suspects, 1,761 were teenagers, 1,228 were in their 20s, 468 in their 30s, and 169 in their 40s. The NPA noted that more than 90% of those arrested for deepfake offenses were teens or young adults, likely reflecting their higher proficiency with digital technology.

The agency also reported that arrests for online sex crimes rose by 47.8% compared with the previous year, highlighting a sharp increase in such offenses.
