October figures show 119,000 individuals remained jobless for over six months despite active employment searches, representing the steepest count in four years, Statistics Korea data confirms.
Long-term unemployment figures hovered just above 100,000 throughout the COVID-19 crisis during 2020 and 2021, subsequently declining until last month's sudden surge.
Among the nation's 658,000 unemployed individuals in October, 18.1% fell into the long-term category.
The demographic most impacted includes 35,000 people aged 20-39 holding minimum four-year degrees—the highest figure since September of last year, when it stood at 36,000.
Despite declining numbers among young people categorized as "taking a break"—those not actively pursuing employment—analysts emphasize the persistent challenge of career-education misalignment affecting highly educated youth remains unresolved.
