India Establishes High-Altitude Airbase Near China
(MENAFN) India has inaugurated a new air facility in Ladakh close to its frontier with China, as indicated by recent media coverage.
The Mudh-Nyoma air force installation is positioned roughly 14 miles (23 km) from the Chinese boundary, according to a news agency.
Constructed at an elevation of 13,700 feet, the airbase was developed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at an estimated expenditure of $25 million, the report noted. The initiative for this airfield began in 2023.
The base features a 1.7-mile runway, additional hangars, an ATC building, a crash bay, and lodging infrastructure.
It is designed to support large transport planes as well as advanced combat aircraft.
Relations between New Delhi and Beijing—strained after a deadly border confrontation in 2020—have gradually improved since the previous year.
In October 2024, both nations concluded a new border patrol agreement after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping conferred during the BRICS summit held in Kazan, Russia.
Furthermore, India resumed issuing tourist visas to Chinese nationals in July 2025, ending a five-year suspension.
