Turkey Says Ukraine Peace Talks 'Inevitable' And Could Be Hosted In Ankara
Turkey's foreign minister Hakan Fidan said on Saturday that peace talks on the Ukraine conflict are“inevitable” and could likely take place in Turkey. Speaking to the broadcaster A Haber, he said the time for negotiations had arrived and conditions for a ceasefire were improving.
Fidan said holding fresh talks and taking“a step forward” were essential, adding that Ankara has already proposed several ideas and hopes they will be implemented. He reiterated that Turkey is ready to host any dialogue aimed at halting the fighting and securing lasting peace.
According to Fidan, the war has reached a stage where both sides may soon be willing to consider negotiations, although neither Moscow nor Kyiv has publicly signaled readiness for formal talks.
Turkey previously hosted early rounds of discussions between Russian and Ukrainian delegations in 2022, but those efforts collapsed as the conflict intensified.
International analysts say Ankara continues to position itself as a mediator, balancing its NATO membership with strategic ties to Moscow while maintaining open channels with Kyiv.
Diplomats note that pressure is mounting on all parties to explore diplomatic options, as the war's economic toll deepens and winter conditions threaten civilian infrastructure across Ukraine.
