Boat Overturn Claims Four Lives Off California Coast

(MENAFN) A panga vessel overturned near Imperial Beach in Southern California during the early hours Saturday, claiming four lives and leaving five others wounded, officials confirmed.

The maritime disaster unfolded just past midnight, Imperial Beach Fire Chief John French reported to a local broadcaster, noting that rescue teams retrieved one victim close to where the boat went down, with three additional bodies discovered in the vicinity of the Imperial Beach Pier.

Emergency responders pulled five individuals from the water alive and rushed them to medical facilities, while U.S. Coast Guard crews extended search-and-rescue missions through Saturday morning, French stated.

The Times of San Diego indicated that investigators have yet to determine whether the craft was being used for human smuggling operations into the United States.

Weather conditions posed severe challenges during the incident, with moderate-to-heavy precipitation beginning to blanket San Diego County. The region faced Saturday the storm system's most ferocious stage—a Pacific weather front intensified by subtropical moisture streams.
