BBC Issues Apology to Trump

(MENAFN) The BBC has acknowledged issuing an apology to US President Donald Trump after airing a documentary that misleadingly altered the speech he delivered just before the 2021 Capitol riot.

The UK’s national broadcaster admitted that a 2024 episode of its Panorama series “gave the mistaken impression that President Trump had made a direct call for violent action” to the supporters who stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

A spokesperson for the BBC stated on Thursday evening that the network’s chair, Samir Shah, had personally written to the White House “making clear to President Trump that he and the corporation are sorry” and assured that the documentary would not be shown again on any platform.

“While the BBC sincerely regrets the manner in which the video clip was edited, we strongly disagree there is a basis for a defamation claim,” the spokesperson added, emphasizing the network’s stance on the legal matter.

Trump, who has consistently denied encouraging the Capitol riot and frequently accused the media of spreading falsehoods, threatened legal action against the BBC for $1 billion (£758 million) unless it apologized, withdrew the documentary, and offered compensation. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt labeled the broadcaster a “leftist propaganda machine.”

The controversy prompted the resignations of BBC Director-General Tim Davie and Head of News Deborah Turness. Numerous UK lawmakers criticized the network, with Conservative Party leader Kemi Bedinoch calling the edited version of Trump’s speech “absolutely shocking.”
