Gaza Faces Mounting Health Crisis
(MENAFN) The Union of Gaza Strip Municipalities issued a warning on Friday regarding the repercussions of 700,000 tons of accumulated garbage in random disposal sites.
Municipal authorities are struggling to deliver even the most basic services due to critical shortages of fuel and necessary equipment.
Alaa Al-Batta, the deputy head of the union, told a news agency that local municipalities are confronting an “impossible equation” as a result of widespread destruction of infrastructure, fuel scarcity, and the ruin of machinery and equipment caused by Israel’s genocide against Palestinians.
He added that these combined challenges have left municipalities incapable of providing fundamental services to both residents and displaced populations, despite a month having elapsed since the ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, with no noticeable improvement in conditions.
The Palestinian official cautioned that a serious health and environmental catastrophe is on the horizon due to the massive accumulation of waste throughout Gaza.
He explained that nearly 700,000 tons of garbage are building up in both northern and southern regions of the strip, as Israel restricts access to central dumping sites located in border areas it controls under the ceasefire east of the so-called “yellow line.”
Al-Batta highlighted that the waste buildup has caused the proliferation of mosquitoes and rodents, as well as contamination of groundwater supplies, posing a serious risk to public health and the environment.
