Lebanese President orders FM to file UN complaint against Israeli wall

(MENAFN) Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has directed the Foreign Ministry to urgently file a complaint with the UN Security Council over Israel’s construction of a concrete barrier in the country’s south that Beirut says crosses beyond the UN-demarcated Blue Line.

According to general reports, Aoun instructed Foreign Minister Youssef Raggi to have Lebanon’s mission at the UN submit the complaint, arguing that the wall violates Lebanese sovereignty as well as UN Security Council Resolution 1701. Adopted in August 2006, Resolution 1701 mandates a halt to fighting between Hezbollah and Israel and establishes a demilitarized zone stretching from the Blue Line to the Litani River.

Aoun also ordered that the complaint cite UN documentation contradicting Israel’s denial of building the barrier and confirming that the wall has blocked residents in the south from accessing more than 4,000 square meters of Lebanese land. The presidency said the reports indicate that UNIFIL has formally informed Israel that the structure must be dismantled.

Lebanon maintains that Israel’s building work and its continued military presence past the Blue Line amount to a breach of its territory and a violation of the internationally recognized boundary set after Israel’s 2000 withdrawal. The presidency added that Israel’s activities, both construction and military deployment, represent a “clear violation” of Resolution 1701 and an infringement on Lebanon’s sovereignty.

UNIFIL announced Friday that Israel erected two concrete walls southwest of the town of Yaroun, effectively cutting off Lebanese access to over 4,000 square meters of land.

Tensions in the border region have been rising for weeks, with near-daily Israeli airstrikes reportedly aimed at Hezbollah personnel and sites inside Lebanon. Since the escalation began in October 2023 and intensified into a full offensive in September 2024, Israeli operations have killed more than 4,000 people and wounded nearly 17,000, according to general accounts.

A ceasefire reached in November 2024 required Israel to withdraw fully from southern Lebanon by January, but Israel carried out only a partial pullback and still maintains forces at five border positions.
