Ukrainian official to discuss prisoner swap talks with Russia
(MENAFN) Rustem Umerov, Secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council and head of the country’s delegation for direct talks with Russia, arrived in Istanbul, Türkiye on Tuesday.
Umerov, speaking on Telegram, said the visit aims to restart the exchange of prisoners of war and civilians between Ukraine and Russia.
"These days, I will be working in Türkiye and the Middle East to unblock the exchange process. There was an agreement, and we need to implement it," he stated.
According to Umerov, a series of meetings are planned in Türkiye to discuss the resumption of these exchanges, although he did not provide details on the participants.
During the third round of direct talks in Istanbul on July 23, both sides reached an agreement on swapping prisoners of war and civilians. Additionally, Moscow suggested creating three groups to work virtually on political, humanitarian, and military issues, but reported that Kyiv had not yet responded.
Beyond Türkiye, countries such as the United Arab Emirates, and to some extent Saudi Arabia and Qatar, have previously facilitated humanitarian exchanges between Russia and Ukraine.
