Why Support Entrepreneurs In Costa Rica?
It's not even dawn yet, and there's already a buzz around the house. The lights are turned on, products are packed, the price list is reviewed, samples are prepared, the trunk of the car is opened, and a final check is made to make sure nothing is left behind. For many entrepreneurs in Costa Rica, this is how some of their days begin: with effort, enthusiasm, and a hint of nerves.
The entrepreneurial spirit has become a pillar of the national economy. According to records from the Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Commerce (MEIC) and DIGEPYME, there are currently 27,020 registered SMEs and 870 formal entrepreneurs in the country. Of that population, 90% are microenterprises: more than 24,000 people who struggle daily to sustain their business ideas.
Each booth at an entrepreneurship fair represents not only products and services, but also dreams, sacrifices, and courageous decisions. Decisions like leaving a stable jo to create your own idea, investing family savings, taking out a loan, training, experimenting, making mistakes... and starting over.
Walking through an entrepreneurship fair isn't just a strollIt's an opportunity to recognize the value of local products, to get closer to those who make each product with their hands and time. Shopping at a fair is much more than buying something beautiful or useful: it's injecting hope into a dream that continues to thrive thanks to the support of those who believe in it.
Entrepreneurship fairs, which are increasingly common in shopping centers, banks, parks, and communities, are a very important showcase for these small businesses. Along the way, you'll find everything from artisanal food products, textiles and clothing, beauty and personal care items, to professional services, crafts, technological solutions, and agricultural products.
It's no coincidence that the most common activities among entrepreneurs are food and gastronomy (23.2%), textiles and clothing (17.6%), and handicrafts and crafts (10.9%). In other words, much of what we consume daily is being offered by people who are energizing the country from the bottom up, with effort and commitment. So, why not consider them among our purchasing options?
Statistics also show that many of these people work in high-demand areas such as health, beauty, culture, commerce, digital services, and even agriculture. They are citizens who adapt, innovate, and learn what it takes to offer quality.
Preparing our economy to support entrepreneursPerhaps that birthday gift could come from a national artisan, or that cake we need for a celebration could come from the entrepreneurship of a neighboring family. Sometimes, the difference isn't in the price, but in the purpose.
Supporting entrepreneurs means supporting each other. Every product sold represents not only income, but also validation: someone believes in what I do, someone has invested in my efforts. And that gesture, which may seem small to us, can be what keeps a dream, a goal, a family alive.
So the next time you pass a stand, stop for a moment. Listen, ask, evaluate. And if you can, buy. Because behind every prepared table, there's someone who got up early hoping that one day, someone like you, will give them a chance.
