Iraq Records 23.9 Percent Voter Turnout in Parliamentary Elections

(MENAFN) Voter participation in Iraq’s parliamentary elections reached 23.9% by noon, according to the nation’s electoral authority on Tuesday.

In an official release, the Independent High Electoral Commission stated that a total of 4,795,685 individuals had cast their ballots since the polls opened in the morning.

Around 21 million citizens are eligible to vote to select members of the 329-seat parliament from a pool of 7,743 candidates.

This newly elected assembly will have the responsibility to choose the president and provide approval to the government.

Speaking to a news agency, commission representative Jumana al-Ghalai highlighted that there is “high security coordination to ensure a smooth electoral process.”

"There is high-level coordination with the rest of the institutions, security agencies, and the Interior Ministry, which is responsible for securing the polling centers,” she added.

Polling stations opened at 7 am local time (0400GMT) and are set to close at 6 pm (1500GMT) with no planned extensions.

Election outcomes are expected to be released within 24 hours of voting, with official confirmation following the review of any appeals.
