KABUL (Pajhwok): Iran's Foreign Ministry says Tehran will make every effort possible to help improve the situation between Afghanistan and Pakistan if both sides agree.

Following Pakistan's military attacks on Afghanistan and Kabul's retaliatory strikes, three rounds of talks were held between the two sides with mediation by Qatar and Turkey - once in Doha and twice in Istanbul.

The latest meeting in Istanbul concluded on Saturday. Spokesman for the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan Zabihullah Mujahid said the talks produced no outcome due to what he called the irresponsible approach and lack of cooperation by the Pakistani delegation despite Kabul's goodwill and mediators' efforts.

IRNA news agency wrote, Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei told reporters on Monday that Tehran is concerned about any escalation of tensions along its eastern borders.

“We are deeply worried about any rise in tensions - not only because of our neighborhood, but because Afghanistan and Pakistan are two Muslim countries with long-standing historical, cultural and religious ties to Iran,” he said.“Any insecurity in the east affects the stability of the whole region.”

Baghaei explained Tehran has urged both countries to exercise restraint and expressed readiness to assist in easing tensions.

Iranian FM Syed Abbas Araghchi recently held telephonic talks with his Afghan and Pakistani counterparts, reaffirming Iran's readiness to help resolve disputes and prevent further escalation, he added.

“We reiterate our willingness to assist, and if both sides agree, Iran will spare no effort to improve the situation,” Baghaei said.

Meanwhile, Afghan Foreign Minister Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi told his Iranian counterpart on Sunday that the IEA attended the Istanbul talks with goodwill and that resolving issues with Pakistan through diplomacy and mutual understanding remained Kabul's top priority.
