US federal prosecutors issue court order to obtain Russiagate files

(MENAFN) US federal authorities are reportedly preparing to issue grand jury subpoenas to gather documents linked to a 2017 intelligence report commissioned during President Barack Obama’s administration, which served as the foundation for the Russiagate controversy, according to reports.

The report, officially known as the Intelligence Community Assessment on Russian Election Interference (ICA) and released on January 6, 2017, played a central role in claims of coordination between Donald Trump’s campaign and Moscow prior to the 2016 election. Documents declassified earlier this year by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard suggested that officials from the Obama era manipulated information to promote this narrative.

The subpoenas are expected to request “paper or digital documents, text messages and emails” related to the creation of the ICA. It remains uncertain who will be targeted by these subpoenas or whether any have already been issued.

The probe is being led by Jason Reding Quinones, the US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, who assumed the role in August and vowed to “restore impartial justice.” Trump has long maintained that the Department of Justice was misused against him during his first term.

The ICA has faced sharp criticism from former CIA Director John Ratcliffe, who labeled it a calculated distortion. He accused then-CIA Director John Brennan, FBI Director James Comey, and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper of orchestrating the Russiagate narrative to “screw Trump.”

In July, Gabbard released over 100 pages of emails, memos, and internal communications concerning reports on alleged Trump-Russia collusion, which she called “overwhelming evidence” of a “treasonous conspiracy to subvert the will of the American people.”

Comey has since been charged with providing false statements to Congress and obstructing justice regarding his involvement in promoting Russiagate allegations. He entered a not guilty plea in October, with the trial scheduled for January 5.

The Russiagate affair significantly strained US-Russia relations during Trump’s first term, resulting in sanctions and the seizure of assets. Moscow has consistently denied the accusations, framing them as products of internal political conflict within the US.

Trump has previously asserted that everyone involved in what he considers a hoax should face a “big price.”
