Strong Quake Jolts Japan’s Eastern Coast, Tsunami Warning Issued

(MENAFN) A powerful 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck off Japan’s eastern shoreline at 0803GMT Sunday, the US Geological Survey reported, rattling coastal communities and triggering a tsunami warning.

The tremor occurred near Iwate prefecture at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6.21 miles), making the quake potentially more damaging for nearby areas, according to seismic data. Residents in the region reported strong shaking, and local authorities have urged caution as aftershocks remain a possibility.

Following the earthquake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for the eastern coastline of Iwate. Officials warned that waves could reach up to 1 meter (3.28 feet), posing a risk to coastal towns, harbors, and low-lying areas. Authorities are advising residents to evacuate to higher ground and avoid beaches, riverbanks, and seafronts until the alert is lifted.
