Japan starts survey for construction of possible nuclear power reactor

(MENAFN) Japan has begun a survey to explore the construction of a potential nuclear power reactor, the first such initiative since the 2011 Fukushima disaster, Jiji Press reported.

Kansai Electric Power announced Wednesday that it is assessing the feasibility of building a new reactor in Mihama, Fukui Prefecture, home to the company’s existing Mihama nuclear plant.

The survey will examine geological and topographical conditions at two sites—inside and outside the current plant—through around 2030. Kansai Electric also plans to evaluate the project’s profitability and review regulatory policies from Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority before deciding whether to proceed.
