(MENAFN) The Kremlin has dismissed the necessity of hastily arranging a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump, according to statements made by spokesman Dmitry Peskov in an interview published Sunday.

While acknowledging that swift preparations for such a high-level encounter remain feasible, Peskov emphasized that urgency is unwarranted, a news agency reported.

"At this moment, what is needed is very meticulous work on the details of the (Ukraine) settlement problem," Peskov added.

The remarks follow a turbulent sequence of diplomatic signals regarding a potential face-to-face meeting. Following an Oct. 16 phone conversation with Putin, Trump announced the two leaders would convene shortly in Budapest, Hungary. However, just six days later on Oct. 22, Trump abruptly reversed course, declaring he had scrapped the scheduled encounter, explaining that the meeting "just didn't feel right to me," and that "it didn't feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get."

In response, Putin characterized the Budapest gathering as delayed rather than definitively scrapped, while pointing out that Washington had originally proposed the summit.

On Oct. 26, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov placed responsibility for any future high-level diplomatic engagement squarely on American shoulders, stating the trajectory of personal contacts at the presidential level will hinge on decisions made by the U.S. side.
